The American Music Awards 2010 took place this Sunday with an array of celebrities descending on the red carpet in their fashionable best and amazing performances at the award show by celebrities including Pink, Rihanna, Usher and many more.
The 16-year-old teen idol, Justin Beiber reigned the awards night, grabbing four trophies and beating out veterans including Lady Gaga, Katy Perry and Eminem for the coveted Artist of the Year trophy. Bieber, along with becoming the youngest artist ever to win the AMA Artist of the Year award, also won the T-Mobile Breakthrough Artist of the Year, Favorite male Pop/Rock artist, and favorite album award.
Rihanna opened the awards show singing a medley of her hit songs which included Love The Way You Lie part 2, What’s My Name and Only Girl in the World. She ended the performance with flames shooting skywards to receive a standing ovation from the audience.
The show proved to be full of memorable performances with likes of Christina Aguilera, Black Eyed Peas and Katy Perry, who also donned a variety of stunning outfits as they performed a series of show stopping numbers. Christina Aguilera performed a stunning rendition of her new song (Express) Burlesque, while Katy Perry also performed her new single ‘Firework’, singing in front of a slew of fireworks, ending her performance with her backing dancers lifting her into the air.
The Black Eyed Peas popped out of Day-Glo boxes for a futuristic performance for their new hit “This Time (The Dirty Bit)”. The group beat Lady Antebellum and Train, taking home the Favorite Pop/Rock Band, Duo or Group award.
Miley Cyrus took to the stage in a gothic themed number where she performed her song Love & Forgiveness wearing a flowing black gown. While, Taylor Swift cemented the best selling performance of her latest album Speak Now with a performance of the song Back to December. She had earlier collected the award for Favourite Female Country Artist.
Pink also performed, even though she is pregnant. She performed ‘Raise your glass’; a tightly choreographed, high-energy dance number.
Kesha took to the stage next, making up for Lady Gaga’s absence by performing in a series of outrageous outfits; she performed her Take It Off looking like something out of space, with beams of light for eyes and sporting a motorcycle helmet. She then stripped down to a mirrored outfit, in the next song with a pack of male dancers dressed like her, complete with blond wigs and fishnet stockings.
The show was closed with a collaboration between 1990s boy bands New Kids On The Block and the Backstreet Boys. They performed a medley of their hits including Everybody (Backstreet’s Back) and the classic number one hit Hangin’ Tough. The two groups also sang Backstreet song I Want It That Way and New Kids number Step By Step, reminding everyone of the 90’s.
