It really seems that Toronto has a good eye out for exceptional films. Before the King’s Speech became an Oscar nominated phenomenon in the U.S.A., Toronto had already claimed this film would do wonders with its’ impeccable storyline and talented cast.

Following a similar story, in 2009, a movie called The Waiting City had premiered in Toronto at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF).  That same year, in regards to Samrat Chakrabarti’s performance in The Waiting City, the Toronto Star featured the indie film king in the Top 6 people to follow.

Flash Forward to 2011, Claire McCarthy’s film, THE WAITING CITY (in which Samrat Chakrabarti plays one of the leads), has 8 nominations for the Film Critics Circle of Australia Awards (the Australian Oscars), with one of the nominations being for Best Picture.  The film is being recognized for its heartwarming storyline and the entire team is being recognized for their hard work.

The Toronto Star had called Samrat’s role in the film a “breakthrough performance”; the same role that also touched Samrat for bringing him back to his roots. “It brought me right back to where my parents are from – Calcutta. Usually I’m the American when I visit, but this time I got into the role and played a working class man from Calcutta. I feel lucky being a part of this film because it allowed be to see and experience India in a different way.”

Upon hearing about the eight nominations, Samrat exclaim’s, “This has been a special film from the beginning. I’m psyched for the whole team, especially the director Claire McCarthy who truly believed in me. Honestly, you don’t need awards to say that a film is beautiful, but sometimes you need awards to help create awareness for a strong film. Especially for Independent films.”
