Morro Da Urcan – Brazil, 11th June 2011- More than 1000 spectators witnessed the best team from ASIA “Chaar Payee”, which bagged 4th position in the Red Bull Tum Tum Pa World Finals at RIO DE JANEIRO. PAQUISTAOO [Pakistan] won the hearts of Brazil!

Their eyes closed, their feet and hands moving fast to the sounds of sticks drumming on classroom tables and of  notepads tearing – that’s how National Finalist team Chaar Payee, from Pakistan, made the Brazilian fans believe that rhythm also exists beyond the boarders of the land of samba. “We loved the crowd response when they cheered for us. We were not expecting this from Brazil [during the Pakistan performance the Brazilian crowd started cheering choirs going PA-KIS-TAAAAANN, over and over]

Surrounded by Sugar Loaf and the beaches of Rio de Janeiro, the world’s best classroom drummers showed their talent for producing sounds, in tune with each other and the crowd. From loud banging sounds to hushed clicks and snaps, many notes were composed to represent 30 countries from Oriental chimes to Caribbean beats. Talha Jamil, Ahmer Mubashar, UsmanQureshi, and Raja Nabeel Banwa of Chaar Payee, representing Pakistan at this mega international platform, became national heroes almost overnight, as they moved from the first round of the world finals into the Top 10, beating countries like India, Australia, Canada and many more. At the end, it was Egypt’s STB that took the crown, winning the second round and thus the World Finals! Chaar Payee came in fourth and were the only Asian country in the Top 5.

During Chaar Payee’s performance with their self created instrument named Arif Gondal, the four ‘brothers’, dressed in identical green ‘Pakistan’ shirts, managed to evoke a mind blowing response to their original composition and cover of Overload’s ‘Cursed’. They had taken some important pointers from Overload’s front man, Farhad Humayun, before leaving for Rio. The Brazilian crowd went on yelling ‘PAQUISTAOO’ [Pakistan] in sheer thrill. Usman Qureshi had accidently cut his finger with a cutter 4 hours prior to the performance but the boys still made Pakistan proud and bagged the fourth position in a tie with Peru and the US.

The host countries’ team, Prostitutos do Ritmo, showed a buzzing drumming performance, and combined with their samba girls and gigolo costumes they made all 700 visitors get onto their feet to dance, which won them the second place. “Having our friends support here in Rio and the samba in our blood, made all the difference for us!

The runner-up team also had rhythm in their blood and Bob Marley as a music idol – Ground Zero, from Jamaica said “We love drumming and reggae and we’re glad Brazilians like this too!

All participants of the Red Bull Tum Tum Pa had one thing in common, and The Sick Beats from Albania put it best when they said: “Being on stage was the best moment of the weekend. Rio was the best prize to win!

Where popular sports such as cricket in Pakistan, have served to disappoint recently, Pakistanis that go and make their country proud in other spheres, be it sports or music, are a welcome breath of fresh air.

National heroes Chaar Payee are now on their way home and will reach Pakistan on 16th June 2011. As they leave Rio, they express that this is a one in a lifetime opportunity and experience they will never forget! Let’s give our heroes a welcome home, fit for kings!
