What a night! 10 pro surfers, a jet ski, a balloon as a moon, Jamie O’Brien as a star, perfect waves and best airs!

The greatest Indonesian and international surfers competed for the title of best aerialist. They were towed towards the waves by a jet ski, to get enough speed and pull off their best trick.

The crowd of more than 3000 people was astonished by windy airs and crazy maneuvers, especially in the final where each of four finalists had 4 waves to do their best. Later Red Bull athlete from Hawaii, Jamie O’Brien, showed his talents in an expression session.

All participants were so exited, though it was very challenging to surf at night – they can’t see the wave far enough, the light blinds them, the speed of the jet ski is much faster than usual surfing, and only landed airs were scored. Nevertheless, all said, it was a very unique experience and they can’t wait to do it again!

I Wayan Betet Merta from Bali was successfully crowned 1st place by beating other participants and impressing the board of judges including Jamie O’Brien.

“It’s very hard to do tow-at at night time with only limited lights. Have to cleverly predict the waves to do the tricks with smooth landing. I feel it is my lucky day because the jet ski driver managed to predict the waves I wanted and of course a perfect timing,” said Betet who regularly represents Indonesia in International surfing contests in Australia, California, Hawaii and Japan.

Following Betet, was his colleague, Made Garut Widiarta in 2nd place, and the 3rd place went to Beau Walker from Australia.

On the same night, the main sponsor of event organized a photo contest, opened for all amateur photographers. After the contest the photographers had to upload one best shot. The winners were selected by famous award-winning photographers Dustin Humphrey and Brad Masters and Surftime magazine editor Andrew.

This kind of event took place for the first time in Asia, but definitely not for the last!
