For the first time ever in Manhattan, the period of Navaratri will never be the same as “Garba In The City” on October 15th transforms traditional Garba events into an exclusive night of dance and celebration of culture with the tri-state’s most discerning audience. With an immense capacity of 800, Garba In The City will be held at The Sports Center at Chelsea Piers complete with a live band featuring Ritesh Rathod of Medley Entertainment.
The inspiration for this exclusive night stems from the desire of young South Asian professionals living in the city who have a strong interest in Garba and/or Raas to participate in celebrating their culture in a classy, high-profile setting. “The interest in connecting with their roots, an admiration for the folk dance and a desire to enjoy the festival period with their peers was a strong impetus for us to create this event. It had to be in the city and had to be at a classy venue as we want to show the discerning Manhattan and tri-state audience that this Garba event is a step above the rest”, said Vikram Chandrasekaran, Founder of Garba In The City.
Garba In The City steps up the caliber of Garba Events:
Geographic Location – Garba’s are held annually in New Jersey, Long Island, and other neighboring areas to Manhattan; holding the event in the city itself brings the opportunity for the hundreds of young South Asians living in New York City to easily attend the event without having to travel outside of the city.
Venue – While Garba’s held in the neighboring communities are typically small events at high school gymnasiums or banquet halls with a low capacity, Garba in the City’s venue, The Sports Center at Chelsea Piers has ample dancing space. The venue includes 3 basketball courts side by side.
Exclusivity – Garba In The City offers a unique experience in that it is marketed to a targeted audience of young South Asian professionals, ages 18-35, who have either participated on Garba/Raas dance teams in college, dance companies, or have a general appreciation of the folk dance. The classy setting will ensure that those who attend enjoy the company of others in their peer groups.
Traditional Music – Garba In The City has booked a renowned live band, Medley Entertainment, featuring Ritesh Rathod. This band is widely recognized in the tri-state area and has performed at several events including weddings and cultural programs. The appeal of having a live band brings authenticity, high energy and flare to the event as the rhythm picks up and the dancers take off!
Experience – The idea behind Garba In The City is for it to be an experience rather than a typical dance event. Attendees will leave with a yearning desire to come back to Garba In The City the following year!
