One Week, 5 sold-out shows, 18 DJs, thousands of partygoers. Red Bull Thre3style took over Vancouver, Canada and ultimately crowned the World’s Best Party Rocker.
In total, 18 international national DJ champions battled for the title of for the title of World’s Best Party Rocker DJ as they performed in sold out venues across the city of Vancouver. The competition consisted for 4 preliminary nights with 4-5 DJs competiting and the winner of those 5 preliminary nights went on to the final competition night on Saturday Dec 17.
The final night of competition consisted of Nedu Lopes (Brazil), Hedspin (Canada), DJ Bazooka (Switzerland), and Supa! (France), with Big Once (USA) and Bitcode (Spain) earning a spot in the Final as part of the MINI Wild Card (www.facebook.com/MINICanada ).
By night’s end it was local boy and global talent Hedspin who impressed the judges and beat out the competition with his ability to integrate all genres and tempo. “Red Bull Thre3style teaches DJs to be diverse and open to all types of music,” said Hedspin. “Being recognized on a worldwide level is a great feeling.” Coming in second place was Switzerland’s DJ Bazooka followed by third place finisher Nedu Lopes from Brazil.
To earn a spot in the World Finals, hundreds of DJs from around the globe battled it out in regional and national qualifiers. At each stage the rules remain the same: 15 minutes to rock the crowd with a set that incorporates at least three genres of music and keeps partygoers on their feet, and the judges impressed.
The panel of judges consisted of Skratch Bastid, 2003 DMC Champion and MTV Canada resident DJ Dopey, 2010 Thre3style Champion DJ kArve, Pete Rock and DJ Premier. They collectively were tasked with evaluating each performer on originality/creativity, track selection, technical skills, stage presence, and audience response.
DJ Dopey: “Other that the set criteria, I am looking for balance, someone who can display technical and party-rocking skills. This week it was all about balance and skills.”
DJ kArve: “This year, the competition was more technical. All DJs were highly skilled and creative.”
The week long preliminary competitions, matched with the final world final night was perfect. Keeping each night to 4-5 DJs made the competition easy to digest.
Heavy street-level promotiuon provided a huge buzz in the city of Vancouver and different headliners each night helped create a distinct draw for the entire weeks worth of events.
18 DJs walked away with one of the best weeks of their lifes and thousands of people in Vancouver were treated to some of the highest quality DJs from around the world. Enthusiam and energy from this event is still felt two weeks after.
