Mission Impossible 4: Ghost Protocol. A Review

Mission Impossible 4: Ghost Protocol. A Review

Lahore’s A-list was out in force last night for the premiere of one of the most awaited movies of 2011, MI 4, which took place at Cinestar. It was cold, but the mood was hot. Smiling faces, a flaming red carpet and media everywhere, resulted in a festive occasion. All were waiting in anticipation of what was to come.

Cinema’s most respected action hero, Tom Cruise is back, as Ethan Hunt, leader of the International Missions Force – IMF.

MI4 is a very successful, action packed, secret agent flick, with Tom Cruise leading the way.

“Blue is glue,” Simon Pegg’s Benji helpfully informs IMF secret agent/superhero Ethan Hunt (Cruise) as he’s about to climb up the side of Dubai’s Burj Khalifa, the tallest tower in the world, using only a pair of electronic suction gloves that light up when activated. Referring to the colour of that light, Hunt asks, “And what’s red?” “Dead,” says Benji, without batting an eyelid.

The aforementioned nail-biting set-piece on the side of the Burj featuring Cruise, defying every bit of the 49 years he has allegedly spent on this planet, forms the centerpiece of this film. This may just be the most breathtaking action movie sequence of the year.

Ghost Protocol is action packed from start to finish and gives you everything you’d want from a movie. At its best, Mission: Impossible 4 is all about high speed rolling sequences, cool gadgets, amazing locations and a fun feeling like this. The story is a fairly simple one, Ethan Hunt and his crew; have to stop a possible nuclear threat before its too late. We are first introduced to how everything starts in motion, with a simple pickup at a train station gone wrong. The good guys and villains are identified within the first 10 minutes of the movie, and you’re basically taken on a ride from every corner of the world.

Tom Cruise leads the way as usual, calm, collective and pretty comfortable in character as Ethan Hunt. The support cast of Simon Pegg (Shaun of the Dead), Paula Patton (Deja Vu), and Jeremy Renner (The Hurt Locker) are pretty solid. Simon Pegg gives the audience a laugh here and there, Paula is basically the good looking partner of Hunt and Renner balances things out as the new recruit trying to figure out who’s right and wrong. A bombing at the Kremlin in Moscow sets plans in full effect to put the entire blame on the crew. IMF has been disavowed and considered a national terrorist. With little to no resources and no backup, they have to figure out who set them up, and how they’ll stop a nuclear catastrophe in the United States.

They certainly upped the action and locations for this final film as well – taking you from Russia, to India and a short death defining scene in Dubai. Director Brad Bird keeps the tone, style, and plot pretty simple. The action, humor and story is pretty slick, with just about everything you’d want with a film like this. While the other Mission Impossible films were all Cruise, it’s pretty even here, with his crew and even other supporting characters given a fair share of screen time.

The blend of different personalities and talents are well done here. Simon Pegg is definitely a great addition here as the tech guru. Renner’s character Brandt performs some pretty great close hand to hand action scenes. He also gives some more dramatic moments that actually brings his character in full circle with Ethan Hunt.

Sabine Moreau’s female assassin is suitably sultry, sexy and lethal.

Mission Impossible the film is a great experience – the self destructing messages, the souped up version of the theme music and the high octane chase across continents are tried and tested but very effective.

Ghost Protocol had a great spy thriller theme throughout; with some great action scenes that will make you watch this again and again. It’s definitely better than MI-3, and though it doesn’t deliver with the same greatness as the first instalment, this film fits perfectly in the franchise. I couldn’t find anything to dislike about this movie. The script, performances and scenarios deliver on all levels that can keep you entertained.

If you choose to accept your mission, I suggest checking out this movie.

SASH!

SASH!

Posted on 25 Jul 2011 at 11:12am

SASH! is a German DJ / producer team, fronted by Sascha Lappessen (born 10 June 1970, Nettetal, Germany), who works in the recording studio with Ralf Kappmeier and Thomas “Alisson” Lüdke. They have sold over 18 million albums worldwide and earned more than 65 Gold and Platinum awards.

Ink was lucky enough to have a little chit-chat with the DJ recently.

Q1) Do you ever wonder what your life would have been like had you chosen football as a career instead of music?

Well of course I did wonder…for sure the career would be at an end by now as I am 40 years now and maybe only goalkeepers play that long.

Q2) What is it like working with production partners Thomas Alisson and Ralf Kappmeier? What sort of experience and talent have they offered to the group?

Well we are all 3 a perfect team. Each person has his own special input to the group and all 3 together work out the secret of the success I guess.

Q3) After minor recognition towards your first song, you took a year long break in your career. What did the members of the group do around this time?

Well I was all the time still touring around the world and did dj-ing and live shows, and in the studio we did as well never stop working. We produced many remixes and new SASH! Songs.

Q4) You recently released a track with multiple mixes for ‘All is Love’. What is different about this song and what sort of feedback have you received for it?

It was a hard thing to do…..and at the end the success was not that great for the song…but we will not give up and have produced already a new single that has come out this year.

Q5) ‘SASH! The Best of UK’ went gold and then platinum in the UK in 2008. Did you ever think that it would receive such recognition when compiling and producing this mix?

Yes I thought so because I see every weekend that people still love the classical tracks of SASH! and go wild on the dance floors around the world.

Q6) Tell us about the awards you have received from radio stations? Do radio station awards really hold a lot of significance for you as a group?

Of course. The radio stations mean a lot to us as it spreads the music to the people .

Q7) You performed in Estonia and Belgium in January 2011. What other countries do you plan on performing in for the rest of the year? Would South Asia be on your list?

I have been to Thailand last year and played again in many countries in the world in 2011. Let’s see if there are any south Asian countries involved.

Q8 ) What do you feel you have contributed to the genre of electronic music over the years, as an artist?

I think we have produced some of the best dance-pop anthems in the last 15 years…so that is great.

Q9) You have remixed tracks for many prominent artists including, Kylie Minogue. What are some of your most prized remixes with legendary artists?

Haha……I loved Kylie !!! and Jean Michelle Jarre.

Q10) What message would you like to send your fans in South Asia and readers of Ink?

I want to say keep dance music alive and supporting the great artists in this genre.

The Mud House and the Golden Doll

The Mud House and the Golden Doll

I really am optimistic that the days are going when our movies would have a “hero” with a huge moustache, a “heroine” old enough to be his mother, songs on which they would dance with trees, an old “mom” who would have spent her life sewing clothes so that her child could get “matric-pass” and a “villain”, (in most cases the heroine’s father) who would only try to come in between the two love birds!

In bidding farewell to this time, the youth of Pakistan has actively started playing their role. One example of this awareness and the willingness to do something is a movie very different from all the movies you or I may have seen. It’s about a child who befriends a man, shunned from the society as being mad. It’s about our society which treats girls as young women who would someday bear children and fulfil the duties to their husband. It’s about a man who is trapped in his childhood and has nobody to help him with his traumas. An accidental friendship between the young Sonya and Pasha raises many concerns and questions by the villagers, but these two are oblivious to the stereotypes that exist. It is the meaningful story of “The Mud House and the Golden Girl” who are bringing such a different perspective to us and making us understand life and revisit the values on which any society should stand.

The reason behind the movie is Hamza Abbasi, a veteran theatre actor who started in 2006 with Shah Sharabeel’s  “Daily in the Dark” in Islamabad.  The then aspiring actor has acted in various theatrical productions with memorable roles like “The Phantom” in The Phantom of the Opera (Islamabad 2008) , “Scar” in The Lion King (Islamabad, 2008), “Christian” in Moulin Rouge (Karachi, 2010) and “Vikram” in Bombay Dreams (Karachi, 2011). He is also acting in two commercial feature films, namely, Hassan W Rana and Bilal Lashari’s “WAAR” and Shamoon Abbasi’s “GIDH” releasing at the end of this year. Hamza has now moved to the big screen with his directorial debut in his feature film “Mudhouse and The Golden Doll”, releasing in June 2011, he shows determination to bring the much needed positive change to the Pakistani cinema.

We wish Hamza all the best for his venture and sincerely hope that more new faces like him join hands to play their role in influencing and restructuring the social norms that define us.

WHITE LOUNGE REVIEW

WHITE LOUNGE REVIEW

By Seemal Jamshed

White lounge cafe is the latest addition to the extremely long list of cafes that are opening up on almost every street of the Lahore. White lounge has opened in the main restaurant and cafe hub of Lahore: m.m alam road and promises to offer something different and exciting for the youngsters.

So we went to try out White Lounge to see what it offered which differs it from the norms of all the other cafes. Situated at the basement, the descending white staircase and frosted glass doors make the visitor curious as to what is being offered inside. Having reached the place, we saw the restaurant filled mostly with youngsters marking it as an ‘in’ hangout place. The ambiance of the restaurant has been established such as to compliment the name of the restaurant; white painted walls, red velvet wallpapers on walls, white sofas with red and black cushions, wooden floors and wooden tables create an atmosphere of a comfortable lounge like one at our homes. A plasma television screen makes the atmosphere complete and is u As we got seated, the waiter served us with the menu. The two page menu disappointed us as it did not offer much variety in the dishes. The appetizers consisted of four dishes only, while the main course offered a typical menu of pastas, burgers and Chinese food. The dessert section also offered only three dishes which were basically the same things but with different names. But contrary to this, the beverages section was filled with a variety of drinks ranging from margaritas to fruit shakes to cappuccinos. As our choice was limited, we ordered the spicy chicken wings with honey sauce from the appetizer along with cashew nuts chicken and fettuccine pasta from the main course. The spicy chicken honey wings were the first to arrive and they were delicious. Next we were served with the main course along with the strawberry margaritas we ordered. The dishes in the main course disappointed us. The cashew nuts chicken was bland and the pasta consisted of nothing but white sauce and a very small amount of chicken. The quantity of the food was also a shock for us. Considering the price of the dishes, the quantity was very less. The strawberry margaritas were not good either and reminded us strongly of a cough medicine.

Our experience at white lounge was not a very good one. ‘Why would someone pay such high prices for food that is good neither in quality nor in quantity?’ says Hira, a visitor at the café. ‘And it doesn’t offer anything which makes it different from all the other cafes.’ another visiter, Ali added. Unfortunately I have to agree with them. The only good thing about the restaurant is the relaxing atmosphere it has to offer. The songs played in the restaurant are usually R’n'B and hip hop songs and caters to their target audience  i.e the youngsters, But being a part of the target audience, we would prefer to go to a place that provides a quality dining experience no matter how much money we have to spend on it.

THE GUIDE TO EID SHOPPING’2010

THE GUIDE TO EID SHOPPING’2010

Posted on 10 Sep 2010 at 4:10am

By: Neha Kamran

Everyone, it’s that time of the year again! ‘Eid’- the mention of the word itself engenders such excitement and anticipation, never mind the wonderful thrill of the action-packed run-up to the actual day.

Now this year, in deference to the crisis situation in our country, we agree the ostentation of the festivities should certainly be forgone. However, this does not mean that we relinquish the traditions and good cheer of the day altogether- this country certainly needs some form of celebration. A low-key Eid does not necessarily mean that we all won’t embark upon or be recipients of the time-honoured and customary rounds of visits to family and friends. Therefore, the dilemma of what to wear is still very much present. Ink understands your quandary and hopes to help out by giving you ‘THE GUIDE TO EID SHOPPING’ 2010’. Enjoy!

1.Clothes, jewellery, shoes, bags, and beauty products all under one roof!

The Humara Pakistan Charity Foundation is bringing you a ‘Charity Fashion Drive’ this year, providing you with an option to help the flood affectees and buy designer items 40% off both at the same time. The exhibition lasts from the 5th to the 6th of September (Sunday and Monday) from 1:30 to 5:30 pm. It showcases the work of designers such as HSY, Ammar Belal, Sara Shahid, Mehdi, Kamiar Rokni, Nilofer Shahid, Zarmina, Muse, Karma, Ammara Khan, Maria Sohail, and Naila Maqbool. Iconic brands are also available with bags and shoes on sale by Dior, Chanel, Marc Jacobs, Miu Miu, Prada, Jimmy Choo and Dior. You can buy stunning jewellery by the likes of Bushra Aftab, Sara Taseer Shoaib, and Kausar Humayun. One can even purchase discount vouchers for haircuts, makeup, and other beauty treatments for such places as Toni and Guy, Ather Shahzad, Depilex, and Arammish. Everything in one place, so you can be completely Eid-ready by the time you’re done shopping! It’s convenient, not heavy on the purse, and the best part is that the entire proceeds go to the flood victims, through the National Rural Support Program (NRSP) Flood Relief Fund Rahimyar Khan.

2.Looking good on Eid Day.

The one thing you want to avoid on the actual day is a fashion fauxpas. How? We’ll show you the way…
Karma: Always a good choice- innovative, fashion-forward, and elegant. Plus, now you can check two things off your to-do list and get a Karma Princess outfit for your daughter while shopping for your own clothes. Don’t you love it when things work out this way?

Origins: One of our personal favourites. Take it from us, one always finds what they’re looking for here.
Generation: As the name suggests, this has been around for a while. And we hope it stays on forever and ever if it keeps producing the same level of quality and style. Combining quality and convenience, there’s always something for everyone at Generation.

Turquoise: A new entry into market for prêt-wear for women, this brand offers you exquisite, chic and wearable designs- a rare combination. Although there is no outlet as yet, you can contact the designer, Nuzhat Kamran, at 0345-416-266 and set up an appointment.

BPDS: The Benish Patel Design Studio (BPDS) was launched the previous weekend at the White Dining Lounge. Up-to-minute and tasteful clothes that we loved. Again, BPDS does not have a store as yet but you can reach the designer, Benish Patel, at 0300-801-6529.

3.Going the tradtional way.

Eid would not be Eid without bangles, henna, and khussas. As millions have done before us, we too will set out on Chaand Raat, in search of these indispensable items. Where to, you ask? Why, where they’ve always gone. We have a list of places in Lahore all ready for you:

*Dupatta Gali, Liberty Market
*Anarkali Market
*Auriga Centre
*Y-Block Commercial Area (especially around the Defence Commercial Area)
*Icchra Market
*Sadar Market

This concludes ‘THE GUIDE TO EID SHOPPING’ 2010’. We hope it comes in useful and minimises the pre-Eid frenzy which has been the lot of all Eid-shoppers since the dawn of time.

As a last piece of advice, with regard to security, please keep a safe distance from haggle-weary women, and under no circumstances try to lay your hands on something that were ‘looking at first’. Take it from us, we’re speaking from experience. Stay safe, it’s a jungle out there.

Cheers! And a Happy Eid to you all in advance!

World Cup Screening 2010 by JBnJaws

World Cup Screening 2010 by JBnJaws

Posted on 16 Jul 2010 at 6:28am

By Zehra Ali

It was a night all boys only dream to experience in perfect splendor. It was a night worth reliving; one worth cherishing. That’s right, you guessed it: It was the night of the Fifa World Cup Final 2010. It is with the purest passion for sports that all Lahoris, men, women and children alike, scattered across the city in search of the perfect destinations from which to gain the best World Cup Final experience possible. Here at Ink, we were invited to perhaps the most exclusive of the exclusive events hosted by none other than Jbnjaws at Uptown L.A.

It can be rightfully stated that the event was definitely not what everyone present had expected. At an event which very boldly stated “no stags allowed!”, there were most certainly stags in all shapes and sizes (as well as ages) present. From boys clad in either Spain or Netherland jerseys and flags, to girls and families, (usually consisting of five or more members) we saw it all. Some couples sitting in the farthest corner from all these “non-hip” attendees were mortified to have followed instructions at all. We here at Ink however, are never quick to judge, therefore, we gave one of the organizers a chance to clear out this slight miscalculation.

Q-The event was supposed to be a couples’ only event. Why was this rule not paid much attention to at the said event?

Ans- Football as a sport is now growing in viewership and following in Pakistan. Since it is neither our national game nor do we have any representation, there is a limited fan following. Hence, our objective of writing couples only was to discourage single male entry, as chances of riots become more and they then cause problems for couples and families. Also remember that the right side of the hall was mostly occupied by couples and families, while the lounges were for couples only. So our purpose of attracting a good crowd and balancing the ratio was fulfilled.

Q-The posters stated that a strict guest list would be kept to ensure the perfect crowd. Why was the checking not as strict as it usually is as compared to all the other events hosted by Jbnjaws?

Ans-I would beg to disagree here. Since the guest list was followed very strictly. Bear in mind that we did not encounter a single incident of an unpleasant nature. There were around 550 people out of which around a 100 people were sent back as we did not have their names on the guest list. I think security was given a lot of preference and that is the reason that we invited guests mostly based on references. No mass mode of marketing was used to publicize the event, except facebook.

It is important to note here that in all our events we do deploy security and have a proper management team but we cannot stop people from coming to the event. We can only stop them from entering if they do not have a pass or if there name is not on the guest list. There is a certain discipline that we as people should have and by pushing at the gate, or coming without any pass that discipline is most definitely violated.

Before the management team at Jbnjaws begins to point fingers and name names as to who might have been the culprit to providing this cleverly articulated statement; let us make it easier for you and unravel the mystery ourselves. The answers to these questions have been provided by Sarfraz Niazi, one of the mastermind directors behind Jbnjaws. Hence, follows our third and final question:

Q-Are you actively working with Jbnjaws at the moment or have you currently moved on to managing celebrities such as Ali Zafar?

Ans-Both myself and Jb are the only two directors for jbnjaws productions and are actively involved in managing it. We recently started our creative ad and design agency called “gray matter” and the only events that this agency will handle will be managed under jbnjaws productions. Our commercial activities have surely been reduced due the security issues and the unstable conditions in the country however we have been doing some great corporate work. The World Cup final together with a concert was a limited commercial activity and InshAllah we are coming up with more events soon!

Yes I am managing Ali Zafar and the experience has been great so far. Besides that, I am working as a brand manager for Radio1FM91, News1 and TV One.  I have been a part of one of the largest and most popular ad agencies and I have learnt that art of multi tasking from there. At times it is difficult to do justice to all four, but that is quite seldom. I feel that it is always fun to keep yourself busy with the work that is your passion!

There you have it folks. Be sure to keep an eye out for more of the upcoming events and if there is one you just so happen to miss, Ink will be your eyes and ears.

The DJ could not have been more DJ-like and the atmosphere created was more than enough to imply the anticipation that everyone present was experiencing. A few free drinks here, and a tweaked up air-conditioning there – a few more of those projection screens strategically placed and Voila! Jbnjaws could have earned themselves a prize-winning event. It’s all in the details really. Though, can’t we say the same about the number of yellow cards given out to the Netherland players? The match was nothing short of a nail-biter and I think we all agree when I say that it will be pain-stakingly hard to have to wait for another four years to experience the wonders of the Word Cup again.

INTERVIEW WITH DJ BOBBY

INTERVIEW WITH DJ BOBBY

Posted on 03 Jul 2010 at 7:02am

Edited by Zehra Ali

How did you decide to become a DJ?
I have been deeply interested in music since I was a child. I have learnt to play the keyboard and guitar. I also happen to have a keen interest in singing and dancing.
While growing up, it was intriguing to notice how the mere press of the “Play” button had the power to make people move and sway. Since then I have wanted to have the same impact on people; to make them move the way I want them to. The job of a DJ helps me achieve just that.

What is the significance of your name DJ Bobby? How did you get that name?
My grandmother loves the name Bobby. When I was born she started calling me Bobby and over the years the name grew on me. Since I adore my grandmother, this name given to me by her was the name I chose to keep in my profession as a DJ.

What has been your biggest gig yet?
A gig I performed at Trilogy and Zinc club in Dubai in 2007.

Who has influenced you the most throughout your life?
My parents. It is the fact that they continue to pray for my success and welfare that I have had such success.

How would you describe your sound?
My music can simply be described as a fusion of club mixes. It contains a variety of house, progressive & tribal house, electro, hip hop and RnB and Desi mixes. I also play several popular club mixes and remixes.

What images and emotions do you want your music to evoke in the listener?
My aim has always been to try and make my audience forget about all their problems and worries and get trapped in a state of complete bliss. I wish to take my listeners, with the help of my music, on a journey across the galaxy. A journey free from trouble and far from the harsh realities of this world into the oblivion where they are at peace.

Do you like to play for big events or in-house parties?
Looking back into my history, you may find a number of small and big events, as well as many national and international gigs that I have played at.I am a music lover as well as an artist hence, I want to cater to my audience without making any discriminations whatsoever.

What genres do you enjoy playing the most?
My personal favorites are house, tribal and hip hop.

How was your experience playing in Dubai and how would analyze the Pakistani audience as compared to your International audience?
It was awesome. Trilogy and Zinc holds a very strong position in the international market and many popular DJs played there. They own top of the line equipment, they provide an excellent service, the environment is great and the even management is very continuously helpful. I don’t want to sound biased here but there is definitely a huge difference between the Pakistani and international crowd. Having said that, I still love my country and playing for my audience here in Pakistan.

Do you think your music can act like a Universal Language?
Yes definitely! I play all genres of music from every part of the world and I have noticed that no matter where I play, the audience’s reaction to it is instantaneous. Everywhere in the world, people love to dance and enjoy. The funny thing is they lip-synch even when they don’t know the exact words to the song and their meaning. They can’t understand the lyrics but they love to dance on my tunes nonetheless.

Where do you see yourself in the next ten years?
Well, I have been a DJ on earth for the past ten years and now I feel it is time to expand my horizons and perform on the moon. Just kidding! I just hope for the best when it comes to my future. Presently, I am working on some projects which will be out in the market soon. I have played with Akcent and am also doing a Live TV show on the channel Aag, so my future seems promising.
