New York, NY, April 29, 2010 — It wasn’t long ago that Major League Baseball went to India to scout for talent. Well, they must have been impressed because the Philadelphia Phillies are bringing one of the world’s hottest neoDesi acts to their field. On Monday, May 3rd Raghav will headline Citizen Bank Park’s Asian-Pacific Celebration.

Raghav will take the field to perform his worldwide hit “Angel Eyes” as well as his new single, ‘So Much’ which will be released to radio and press on Monday.

The release of ‘So Much’ marks a totally new sound from Raghav, whose debut album, Storyteller, is iconic for the neoDesi audience. The track has been produced by Labrinth, who recently produced Tinie Tempah’s worldwide hit ‘Pass Out’. Fans can look forward to a massive summer banger and a fresh electro-pop vibe from Raghav.

As a die-hard sports fan himself, Raghav says, “It is really exciting to see how sports and music are coming together to celebrate culture. I am proud to represent our people at the Asian-Pacific Celebration and am honored that the committee thought of me to perform.”

This is the seventh year for Citizen Bank Park’s Asian-Pacific Celebration. The event, which is always sold out, is spear headed by Mayank Amin and Bollywood Dreams Entertainment.  Amin says that this year is the most exciting because of Raghav’s participation in the celebration.

In addition to Raghav’s performance, the event will include performances by AATMA Performing Arts and Philly’s very own Broadstreet Baadshaz dance troupes, live music by Akshar Dholis, and baseball themed henna tattoos. Fans will also have the opportunity to learn basic Bollywood dance at the stadium.

In the past, Raghav has played to sold-out crowds at prestigious venues in America, LA, Kenya, Pakistan, India, Australia, Indonesia, Africa and the Middle East. He has sold 1.3 million copies of Storyteller worldwide making it the sixth largest international selling album in India. Raghav has had four top ten records in The UK.

COVETED AWARDS AND NOMINATIONS

Move over Midas, there’s a new king in town and he’s about to bag all the gold. This week, musical golden boy, Imran Khan was nominated for four UK AMAs and accepted an extremely prestigious award from Anokhi Magazine.

Khan is nominated for Best Album for Unforgettable, Best Desi Act, Best Male Act and Best Video for ‘Amplifier’. The UK Asian Music Awards are the British Asian equivalent of the Brits or the Grammys. Fans determine the winners by voting for their favorite at www.theukama.com. This year the event will take place on March 11th.

How does he feel to have so many nominations? Khan says, “The nominations for the UK AMA’s are great. I have worked tirelessly to deliver a hot album and bring forward a brand new urban desi sound for my generation of desi music listeners. Let’s hope my fans feel the same and vote for me.”

Anokhi Magazine presented Imran Khan with the 2010 Musical Artist of the Year, Male award at their 4th annual Sexy and Successful awards gala. Khan also performed at the event’s gala and after party. Each year Anokhi creates a list for their magazine of Sexy and Successful individuals from which they choose winners from various fields.

These awards and nominations come after an incredible year for Imran Khan. His debut album,‘Unforgettable,’ was the highest selling bhangra album of 2009. The album sold more copies in the first week than any other release of the year. The music videos for his hit singles, ‘Amplifer’ and ‘Bewafa’ have been viewed just under 3.5 million times on YouTube. ‘Amplifier’ became the anthem of the summer with the highest number of requests at UK radio stations catering to the South Asian demographic.

Ali Sher feat. Rafaqat Ali Khan – ISHQ

(Lahore: 15 December 2009) Following the successful release of his third studio album ‘Beetaye Pal’, Ali Sher introduces his work as a composer on a collaborative single with Rafaqat Ali Khan entitled ‘Ishq’.

Originally written by Ghulam Farid Khan, Ali’s composition is inspired by the Sindhi Bharwain Rag and is a fusion of both Eastern and Western instruments such as Ethnic Percussions, Muted Guitar, ‘Tabla’, ‘Dholak’ and ‘Duff’. He has also incorporated African instruments such as the ‘D.Jembe’ and ‘Congo’.

Rafaqat Ali Khan, who hails from the illustrious Sham Chaurasia Gharana is renowned for his work in various Bollywood productions including the Hrithik Raushan hit ‘Krrish’. In harmony with his family generational legacy, Rafaqat Ali Khan brings the classical ‘Khayal Gayeki’ inspiration and tradition to Ali Sher’s composition.

Speaking about this collaboration, Ali Sher has said, “I’ve always wanted to collaborate with Rafaqat Sahab, but never got a chance. I’ve seen him perform numerous times, and have been mesmerized by the depth and passion with which he sings. I believe Rafaqat Sahab’s ‘Gayeki’ is deeply rooted in our heritage and I am thrilled to be a part of ‘Ishq’.

“This ‘Kafi’ style of singing has been around for over 100 years and belongs to my Gharana. Ali Sher has composed and arranged this song beautifully. He is an intelligent and passionate musician and we are currently planning on doing a whole album together.” says Rafaqat Ali Khan on his collaboration with Ali Sher for ‘Ishq’.
Recorded at Ali Sher’s studio, Ishq has been roughly arranged based on the free form vocals of Rafaqat Ali Khan. With the release of this song, Ali Sher plans to collaborate with various classical and Sufi artists in the future to develop his work as a composer.

Ali Sher Profile:

Ali Sher began his music career in the early nineties, when the Pop music industry in Pakistan was still in its early experimental stages. Over the decade Ali has professionally streamlined and broadening his music and genre with three albums, musical scores for sitcoms and serials along with diverse collaborations with the likes of Ustad Tanveer Hussain, Ustad Ballu, Mekaal Hassan and most recently with Rafaqat Ali Khan.
His first Album, ‘Yadoon Main’ was released in 2001 accompanied with the successful music video ‘Shaam’. This was followed by his second album, ‘Mann Marzi’ released in 2003, which included hit singles like ‘Chan Sajna’, ‘Mein Tay Mann Lae Haar’ and ‘Hijr’. His third and most recent album ‘Beetay Pal’ was released earlier this year and is a blend of live music and electronic beat. Live music on the album is played by Mekaal Hassan, Ustaad Ballu khan, Ustaad Wajid Ali and Rana Hassan.

With more than 14 years of experience; Ali’s music has come to represent a creative blend of genres ranging from compositions to synthesized sensibilities. His music portrays a passion for culture and language and he diversifies his music by expressing his creativity through both Urdu and Punjabi vocals.
As a songwriter and composer, he has also composed music for several artists and organizations including a collaboration with Hadiqa Kiyani for her second album ‘Roshni’, the title song for ‘Dr aur Billa’ by Jawad Bashir and a musical composition entitled “Save the Nation” for the All Pakistan Endocrine & Diabetes Association (APEDA), for which he received a special award in 2008.

Ali Sher has diversified his artistic sphere over the years through his acting in sitcoms such as ‘Saath’, and ‘Yeh Tau Hona Hi Tha’; both of which were aired on Hum TV. He was recently also involved in the composition of music for acclaimed international film ‘Kashf’ which previewed in Cannes and Berlin and for the documentary ‘Made in Pakistan’, slated for international release in 2010 and aired locally in 2009.

Ali is currently working on his fourth album along with the release of his latest collaborative venture titled “Ishq” featuring Rafaqat Ali Khan of the illustrious Shaam Chaurasi Gharana. With ‘Ishq’ Ali Sher has experimented with eastern classical fusion. Composed, structured, mixed and produced by him, “Ishq” is sung in the famous ‘Kafi’ style in which Ali has incorporated instruments including ethnic percussions, muted guitar, ‘tabla’, ‘dholak’, ‘duff’ and the African ‘D.Jembe’.

It is an honor to be remembered by generations to come, especially when one has served in educational institutes, where children remember their beloved teachers and courteous helpers till the time they grow old. Lahore School of Arts and Sciences, on the day of its 22nd anniversary, paid tribute to its oldest and first employee, the Late Azeem Khan. It was no ordinary tribute to Azeem Khan; the evening was mesmerizing with music from the band Laal. Held at Alhamra Cultural Complex, Open Air – Qadaffi Stadium, the event was managed by none other than ‘one of the most organized event planners in town’ – Salina Rashid of Lotus Client Management and Public Relations.

Azeem Khan, a security guard, was the guardian of the school. As explained by the faculty at LACAS, “with his natural exuberance, deep sense of responsibility and traditional Pathan loyalty, he took it upon himself to be the guardian of the school’s discipline, reputation and smooth functioning, and generated warmth in all who came across him. In a sense he typified LACAS’ culture of egalitarianism and equality before the law.” The tribute to its legendary employee has added to the reputation of LACAS, by inculcating a sense of social responsibility within its student body and for encouraging learning through outdoor activities.

Since its establishment in 1987, LACAS has upheld its value and traditions with dignity and devotion. Nazi Qureshi – Director of LCAS at the occasion said, “Music, as they say, is a universal language – an educator. LACAS has always considered cultural education to be as vital to a child’s development as academic excellence. Today, LACAS is proud to invite their current students, faculty and alumni to salute the memory and legacy of the late Azeem Khan. For twenty years, no one walking through the gates of LACAS could miss him; he was always the one constant as the institution grew and evolved. Azeem Khan left an indelible mark in the lives of so many. ‘LAAL’s music speaks of social education through music and with three band members being LACAS alumni, we thought having the band live in concert to be a befitting tribute.’

In addition to this, LACAS made the right choice by choosing LAAL for this event. Inspired by Sufi music, their songs stirred spiritualism and emotions of patriotism within the audience. The voice, the music, and the showmanship even got the elder audience rocking. It was interesting to hear the guitarist and band member Taimur Rehman say, “Three members of our band are teachers and we feel very strongly about education. In fact, for us Laal is also a means for political and social education through music. The future of the country lies in education…”

Amidst political insecurity, it was great to see the enthusiasm of school kids, the courage of school faculty and LAAL’s exuberance, which put together, made this night so memorable. By the way, this LAAL concert night by LACAS, was my little son’s first concert. I am glad I took him along.

Get Ready! An army of music has loaded its guns to blast Lahore with music preaching freedom, writes Marian Sharaf.

For the past many years, music has played a vital role in initiating peace movements and bringing revolution; be it WWII or the Vietnam War – Flower Power being the biggest and most affective of all. No wonder someone once said, “The guitar is mightier than the sword.” Unfortunately, our country, which was born amidst political chaos of the Indian British Raj, is yet gliding in doldrums. There have always been artistes struggling for recognition, writers pleading for freedom of expression and politicians proving their loyalty in vain. Nonetheless, the entertainment industry has survived, positively making an impression every now and then. Yet, there is a lot to do; a lot more to talk about.

Our hills haven’t been alive with the sound of music; it’s always been the beat of marching feet and a sound of distant guns. Organizing gigs on Independence Day isn’t enough. The nation needs to come closer in a vibrant style; heart to heart – soul to soul.

Well, 2009 won’t be just 2009 anymore because Aag Tv and Fire Records have taken the initiative to launch the biggest music event in the history of Pakistan; it’s called AAG ALIVE – Duniya Dhekey Gee [The World Will See]. Our army of musicians have loaded their guns and are all geared up to blast the city with non-stop music for a straight 12 hours, broadcast in 5 countries – across 3 continents. Yes, for the first time Pakistan will witness, enjoy and celebrate music, as it happened in Woodstock and Live Aid. AAG Alive aims to put various genres of music together with the message of peace and solidarity. The two day journey will include 12 bands, solo artists, Live Acts and DJs, including, the legendry Ali Azmat, Atif Aslam, Noori, Strings, Fuzon, Rozan, Aaro, Hadiqa Kiyani, Javed Noman, Rahim Shah and Shiraz Uppal to name a few.

As stated by AAG Alive team, “From absolute to extreme, the mammoth event is a unique two day marathon, in the field of 15 thousand as an audience. Participation of over 22 music heavy weights and an atmosphere will rival some of the biggest events in the world.” Freedom of expression and celebrating music is what AAG ALIVE will be all about. Participants may camp the night before the bugle plays. There will be jam sessions, bonfires, dance floors and most importantly, FREEDOM!

The event that will mark 25th October, 2009 as a day for solidarity through music, and will show the world that no force can kill the patriotism of Pakistanis. Ali Azmat, who spoke at the AAG ALIVE press conference held at Avari Hotel Lahore said, “I don’t remember anything like this happening in history before. Since the earthquake in 2005 that happened on the same date as this, we have been drowning in one problem after another. We have more in life to think of; more than inflation or the social depression we are trying to survive. It’s time to show that no one can defeat us, no one can scare us. We have to bring ourselves back to life. AAG ALIVE with help us stay alive.”

Music in Pakistan has made a positive impression the world over. It has surely come through hard times, and is continuing its struggle despite security issues. Salute to our musicians, who will gather on the battle field, to show what music in Pakistan can do. It’s amazing how people are responding to this event. Hey there everyone! Here’s a brief review on something special:

Chester’s (Linkin Park Vocalist) new album,  ’Dead by Sunrise’, was released yesterday (13th October 2009). It’s available for download directly from your iTunes / Amazon / Microsoft Zune Marketplace.

I personally bought the album and loved it.

The album begins with the ground breaking song “Fire”. It has a kind of alternative rock style to it. I think ‘Fire’ is performing the best, on the 2009 Single’s music chart, so far. There are some other amazing songs on the rest of the album such as “Crawl Back In”, “Inside Of Me”, and not to mention the soft rock track “Too Late”. Some other good ones are “My Suffering”, “Give Me Your Name”, and “Walking In Circles”.

The album is a shift from the typical Linkin Park rock / alternative / soul and NuRock style. I really don’t want to ruin the surprise for you, so check out the iTunes Link
